Coordinates of points on the Cartesian plane

The position of any point in the plane can be represented by an ordered pair of numbers (x, y). These ordered pairs are called the coordinates of the point.

Example 1

In the diagram, the point A has coordinates (2, 3).

The point B has coordinates (–2, 1).

The point C has coordinates (1, –2).

Cartesian plane. Three points A( 2, 3), B(–2, 1), C(1, –2).
